HOLIDAY RESORT HOTEL, SAPELE Creating a Sense of Spatial Harmony through Organic Architecture

ABSRACT

With the undisturbed natural environment becoming more and more scarce, it is increasingly essential to design buildings so that they are in harmony with the environment to ensure that the beauty of nature may still be enjoyed by all. A return to embracing nature as an architectural driver is imperative in order to bring back a coherent understanding and compatibility between man and his surroundings that cannot be achieved with each as opposing elements. Designing in harmony with the environment leaves the land relatively untouched and offers a visual connection to the landscape. Resorts are places where people retreat to release the stress of their everyday life and to be at one with nature, and thus, should be designed to be in harmony with its environment. This study seeks to illustrate the use of organic architecture in creating a sense of spatial harmony in the design of resort hotels especially in Nigeria which is the location of study. Creating a sense of spatial harmony through organic architecture can be achieved by the use of natural elements on the site to enhance the landscape, designing the building to take a form that conform with the natural features of the site, and the use of natural colours and textures for the building facades. Six resort hotels were used as case studies and they were analysed with respect to the benefits of using organic architecture in creating a sense of harmony in resort hotels. The analysis showed that harmony through organic architecture was mostly applied in the foreign case studies while it was minimally utilized in the local case studies. However, with the growing need to preserve the natural environment and provide the desired memorable experiences required in resort hotels, tourists are showing a stronger willingness to pay for welldesigned organic hospitality services even if they come at higher rates. This finding suggests that resort hotels designed in harmony with nature is not only a means of bridging the gap between man and nature but can also provide financial incentives. Thus, the study concludes with the proposition that designing in harmony with nature is the path to creating a viable tourism industry in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1.0 Background of study

Over the ages the complex interaction of natural evolution and human adaptation has given every place on earth a unique set of qualities that sets it apart from all other places. Due to this, humans, since the ancient times, have been in search of spaces to meet their various needs of leisure, recreation, tourism etc. This led Robinson 1976 to posit that the urge to discover the unknown, to explore new and strange places, to seek change in the environment and to undergo new experiences are some of the basic reasons behind the movement of people from their location to other places.

However, Rocca 2007 puts it forth that the natural environment manages to fill us with a sense of awe and amazement despite the amount of scientific knowledge mankind has gathered. Hence nature still holds great mysteries that we may never be able to unravel, our survival is completely dependent on nature and man is now trying to regain a close connection with nature.

Furthermore, Tsui 1999 maintained that the qualities of nature can and ought to be an integral aspect of our architecture, and that within the beauty of nature is an ...Get Complete Material.
