THE EFFECTS OF THE IGBO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

THE EFFECTS OF THE IGBO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract

The major objective of this study was to identify the effects of the Igbo language and culture on the English language as used in this part of the country. In carrying out the research, observation and limited interviews served as the data gathering technique. Notes were the major instruments used. The outcome of the research showed that the greater influence of Igbo on English was in the areas of codemixing and codeswitching as well as in the loss of linguistic competence both in Igbo and English by Igbo users of English, leading to what may be called semilingualism.

Becoming bicultural was also identified as one of the effects. The study concluded that the effects were a natural outcome of languages in contact.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The obvious relationship between language and culture has long been acknowledged. For instance, Nehru argues that a language is something infinitely greater than grammar and philology: It is the poetic testament of a race and culture and the living embodiment of the thoughts and fancies that have moulded them qtd. in Maduabum 4. Hantrais believes that culture is the beliefs and practices governing the life of a society for which a particular language is the vehicle of expression. Therefore, everyones views are dependent on the culture which has influenced them, as well as being described using the language which has been shaped by that culture. The understanding of a culture and its people can be enhanced by the knowledge of their language qtd. in Leveridge I. From this, one can see that learning a new language involves the learning of a new culture. Consequently, Bryam argues that teachers of a language are also teachers of culture qtd. in Leveridge 1. The foregoing provides the background for understanding the implications of the advent of the English language to Nigeria. As one of the most enduring legacies left behind by the former British colonial masters, the English language has come to stay, with its monumental impact on the various segments of national life. The implantation, acceptance and role of English in Nigeria started with its being adopted as the channel of instruction in 1882 and a vehicle for the training of the badly needed manpower to run the fledgling government services. In his words, the English language was thus institutionalized as the language of government, education, commerce, industry, law and administration Baldeh 3. ...Get Complete Material.
